What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? How It Differs From SEO

Answer engine optimization (AEO) prepares your content to be cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers. How it differs from SEO, the technical prerequisites, how to write for it and how to measure it.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of preparing your content and brand so that answer-generating systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode cite or recommend you. It is not a separate discipline that replaces SEO but a layer built on top of it: Google states plainly that there are no additional technical requirements to appear in its AI features, and that a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to be shown in search. The difference lies in what you aim for, how you write and how you measure success.

Are AEO, GEO and LLMO the same thing?

In practice, largely yes. AEO (answer engine optimization), GEO (generative engine optimization) and LLMO (large language model optimization) are different names for the same question seen from different angles: when AI generates an answer, does it read your content and cite it as a source, and does it mention your brand? What matters is the work you do, not which term you use.

It is also worth being clear about what AEO is not. Hidden text shown only to bots, meaningless instructions aimed at AI, or dozens of thin pages that repeat the same question in different words do not produce lasting results, and these methods are risky under search engines' spam policies too. What lasts is content that genuinely answers the reader and brand information that can be verified.

How do AI answers choose their sources?

Most answer engines search the web before generating an answer, take the relevant sections from the pages they find and write the answer based on them. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode can break a question into subtopics and run several related searches (query fan-out), which lets them show a wider range of links.

This has two consequences:

  • You have to be found first. Google's AI features rely on the Google index. For ChatGPT's search feature, OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler visits sites; for Perplexity, PerplexityBot does. A site that blocks these crawlers largely loses its chance of being cited in those engines' search answers.
  • Passages compete, not pages. The engine does not use the whole page but the paragraph that contains the answer. Paragraphs that make sense on their own and give a clear answer are better suited to being quoted.

How is AEO different from traditional SEO?

  • Goal: In SEO, the goal is to appear high in the results list and get the click. In AEO, the goal is to be cited as a source in the generated answer, or mentioned as a brand.
  • Unit: SEO ranks pages; an answer engine often uses one section within a page.
  • Authority: Backlinks still matter, but answer engines also look at consistent information about your brand across the web: do your own site, your business profiles, industry listings, news and user reviews say the same thing?
  • Measurement: SEO measures clicks and rankings. AEO also tracks which questions your brand is mentioned in and the referral traffic coming from answer engines.

We compare the two in more depth in our GEO vs SEO guide.

What are the technical prerequisites?

  1. Manage robots.txt deliberately. According to OpenAI's documentation, sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot collects data for model training and is a separate decision; you can allow one and block the other. Perplexity also states that PerplexityBot must be allowed for a site to appear in its search results. Check that your CDN or firewall rules are not blocking these crawlers without you realizing it.
  2. Serve important content as text. Google's recommendations include making important content available in text form. A price table embedded in an image, or content that only appears when JavaScript runs in the browser, may not be read equally reliably by every crawler.
  3. Build internal links. Making your pages findable through links within the site is still a basic rule.
  4. Keep structured data consistent with the visible text. Describe your organization, services, products and authors with schema.org markup; Google stresses that structured data must match the visible text on the page. See our guide to structured data for AI.
  5. Know where you want to limit visibility. You can restrict how your content is shown in Google's AI features with the nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex controls.

How should you write content for answer engines?

  • Put the answer first. Every article and every section should open with a direct answer to the question, with the details after it.
  • One heading, one question. Write headings the way readers actually ask, and make the section beneath answer only that question.
  • Be concrete. Sentences with dates, numbers, steps, thresholds and conditions are quoted more easily than generic praise. Give the source for every piece of data you use.
  • Who wrote it, and when was it updated? Author information, area of expertise and the last updated date are trust signals.
  • Cover a topic as a whole. Linked articles on the same subject help the engine see you as the go-to source on it. Very similar articles answering the same question split the signal; it is better to merge them.

How do you strengthen brand authority?

When answer engines respond to a question like "Which agency in Istanbul sets up a CRM?", they do not look only at your site. They look at what the web says about your brand. So your company name, address, services and areas of expertise should be consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories and your partners' listings. Being mentioned on independent sites, customer reviews and expert content that others cite are stronger signals than the claims you make on your own site.

Measurement is more indirect than in traditional SEO, but it is not empty:

  • Search Console: Since 31 August 2026, Google has offered a separate Generative AI performance report in Search Console, where you can see your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode broken down by page, country and date. Growth in impressions for long, question-style queries is also a good sign.
  • Referrals in analytics: Track visits from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com in a separate channel group.
  • Question set tracking: Define 20 to 30 questions your customers would ask, and ask them in different answer engines at regular intervals. Is your brand mentioned, which of your pages is cited, and is the information correct? Answers vary by person and time, so look at the trend, not a single result.
  • Branded searches: Growth in searches for your brand name is an indirect indicator of being mentioned in answer engines.

What to do in the first 30 days

  1. Confirm in robots.txt and your CDN rules that OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot can access your site.
  2. Rewrite the first paragraph of your 10 most important pages so it directly answers the question each page addresses.
  3. Describe your organization with structured data and make it consistent with your external profiles.
  4. Find older articles that share the same intent and merge them.
  5. Build your 20 to 30 question tracking set and record the first measurement.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need an llms.txt file for AEO?

Google says there are no additional technical requirements to appear in its AI features. llms.txt is a proposed file format for giving AI tools a summary of a site; adding one does no harm, but it does not create visibility on its own. Prioritize crawler access, clear content and consistent brand information.

If I block GPTBot, will I disappear from ChatGPT?

According to OpenAI's documentation, GPTBot is used for model training and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT's search feature. If you block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot, your content is not used for training but can still be cited as a source in ChatGPT search answers.

How long does AI search optimization take to show results?

Technical fixes (crawler access, robots.txt) can take effect within a few days to a few weeks; OpenAI states that robots.txt changes take effect in about 24 hours. The effect of content and brand authority work shows over months, as a trend.

Does AEO matter for small businesses?

Yes, especially for local and specialist services. People ask answer engines for recommendations for a specific city or need. If your business information is consistent, your service pages are clear and your customer reviews are current, a small business can appear in those recommendations too.
