How to Get Your Website Indexed by ChatGPT and Cited in Answers

There is no sign-up form for ChatGPT. Visibility depends on OAI-SearchBot access, pages that answer questions clearly and consistent brand information. Here is which crawler to allow and how to measure results.

There is no submission form or registration process for getting "indexed" by ChatGPT. Your brand shows up in ChatGPT answers in two ways: through what the model learned during training, and through the web search ChatGPT runs while answering a question. The part you can influence directly is the second one: do not block OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot; write pages that answer questions clearly; and make sure the information about your brand is consistent across the sources that mention it.

What does "getting indexed by ChatGPT" actually mean?

With Google you can submit a sitemap and request indexing. ChatGPT has no equivalent. OpenAI's page for publishers says that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. One technical step stands out as the requirement: do not block OAI-SearchBot, so your pages can be used in summaries and snippets.

So the answer to "how do I get my website into ChatGPT?" has three layers: crawler access (technical), pages that can answer a question (content), and recognition of the brand across the web (reputation). If one layer is missing, the other two are not enough on their own.

Which OpenAI crawlers exist, and which ones should you allow?

The most common mistake in older guides is confusing GPTBot with the search crawler. According to OpenAI's current documentation, each one has a separate job:

  • OAI-SearchBot: Used to show websites as results in ChatGPT's search features. If you want to appear, this is the crawler you need to allow.
  • GPTBot: Crawls content that may be used to train generative AI models. Blocking it signals that you do not want your content used for training. It is not the crawler that decides search visibility.
  • ChatGPT-User: Visits a page when a user asks ChatGPT or a custom GPT a question. Because the request is initiated by a user, OpenAI notes that robots.txt rules may not apply.
  • OAI-AdsBot: Used to check the safety of pages submitted as ads in ChatGPT.

This separation gives you flexibility. In your robots.txt file you can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot. That way your pages can still be cited in search results while you state that you do not want your content in model training. OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to be reflected in its systems.

Two more details matter. First, even a page you block from OAI-SearchBot can appear in ChatGPT as a plain link and title if it is discovered through other sources. If you do not want that, add a noindex tag to the page, and keep the page reachable so the crawler can actually read the tag. Second, even when robots.txt allows these bots, the firewall at your hosting provider or CDN may be blocking them. Check your server logs to confirm that OAI-SearchBot requests are actually getting a response.

Where does ChatGPT search get its sources?

According to OpenAI's help page, ChatGPT search sometimes works with third-party search providers: it rewrites the user's question into one or more targeted search queries and sends them to those providers. The same page links to the privacy policies of Microsoft and Shopify. For that reason, checking that your site is properly indexed in Bing, not only in Google, is a sensible step for ChatGPT visibility.

The same page points out something else: ChatGPT can use the user's approximate location and, if memory is turned on, saved preferences when it rewrites the query. For local questions such as "web design agency in Istanbul", results can vary from person to person. Looking at a single screenshot and concluding "we show up in ChatGPT" or "we don't" is misleading.

Which pages get cited in ChatGPT answers?

When ChatGPT answers a question, it tends to cite the page that gives the most direct and verifiable answer. This is not a ranking rule anyone can guarantee, but in practice certain content traits help:

  • The answer is in the first paragraph: The definition, the factors that affect price, or the steps are written clearly at the top of the page.
  • Concrete information: Service scope, delivery time and the cities you work in are written as text on the page, not buried inside images.
  • Headings phrased as questions: Sections that turn the questions people actually ask into headings, with a short answer underneath.
  • Freshness and ownership: It is clear who owns the page, when it was last updated and how to get in touch.
  • Content that does not depend on JavaScript: When the main text is in the page source, it is easier for a crawler to read.

How does your brand look outside your own website?

AI answers do not look only at your website. If your brand name, what you do and where you are located are written the same way in industry publications, business directories, your Google Business Profile, your LinkedIn company page and customer reviews, the model is more likely to describe you in the right context. If different sources show a different company name, an outdated list of services or a branch that has closed, the answer will be mixed up as well.

The work here is correction, not advertising: update outdated information, keep your own official channels consistent, and publish content that other sites will want to cite on topics where you have real expertise. How do you measure whether you appear in ChatGPT?

OpenAI states that visits coming from ChatGPT search automatically get the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter. By tracking this source as a separate segment in Google Analytics 4, you can see which pages receive traffic from ChatGPT.

In addition, prepare a list of 20 to 30 questions your customers are likely to ask, and once a month ask them from an account with memory turned off. Note whether your brand appears, which source is cited and whether the information is correct. Since results can change with the person and the location, look at the trend over time rather than at individual answers.

A checklist to get started

  1. Is OAI-SearchBot allowed in your robots.txt file? Have you made a deliberate decision about GPTBot?
  2. Does your firewall or CDN return an error page to these bots? Check your server logs.
  3. Is the site indexed in Bing as well as in Google?
  4. Do your service and product pages give a clear answer in the first paragraph?
  5. Are your company name, address and service description the same on your site, your profiles and directories?
  6. Do you have a GA4 report that tracks the chatgpt.com source, plus a monthly question list?

What should you avoid?

Be wary of services that promise to "register you with ChatGPT"; no such registration system exists. Adding hidden text that users cannot see, writing artificial FAQ blocks that repeat the same question dozens of times, or stuffing keywords into every page backfires in search engines and in AI answers alike. Files such as llms.txt do no harm, but they do not appear as a visibility requirement in the OpenAI documentation we reviewed.

Frequently asked questions

If I block GPTBot, will I disappear from ChatGPT?

No. According to OpenAI's documentation, GPTBot collects content for model training; the crawler that determines whether you appear in ChatGPT search results is OAI-SearchBot. By blocking GPTBot and allowing OAI-SearchBot, you can keep your search visibility and still signal that you do not want to take part in training.

How do I see ChatGPT visitors in Google Analytics?

Links clicked from ChatGPT search automatically carry the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter. In GA4, filter traffic where the session source is chatgpt.com to see which of your pages receive visits from ChatGPT. If a user copies and pastes the link instead, this trace can be lost.

ChatGPT shows wrong information about my company. What can I do?

There is no channel for sending a correction to ChatGPT directly. The job is to find the source of the wrong information: it may be an old directory listing, a page for a closed branch or a profile that was never updated. Once you fix those sources and the relevant page on your own site, answers tend to update over time.

How long does it take for a new website to appear in ChatGPT?

There is no fixed timeline. Robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to reach OpenAI's systems, but whether a page gets cited depends on how well the content matches the question and how well the brand is recognized in other sources. A good first step is to make sure the site is indexed in Google and Bing.
